Tuna is probably the most widely commercially harvested fish family. It is popular among humans because it does not have a strong fishy flavor. It is an extremely versatile fish, with sturdy flesh, and can be found canned, dried, fermented, and fresh across most of the world. Canned tuna was first produced in 1903, quickly becoming popular. Canned tuna is a prominent component in many weight trainers' diets, as it is very high in protein and is easily prepared. Tuna fish are an excellent source of a variety of important nutrients including the minerals selenium, magnesium, and potassium; the B vitamins niacin, B1 and B6; and perhaps most important, the beneficial omega-3 essential fatty acids. Tuna is canned in a variety of edible oils, in brine or springwater.
